AQUAPONICS

Aquaponic culture: what it is and how it works

Impianti di Acquaponica

Aquaculture + hydroponics = aquaponics

Aquaponics is a soilless farming system based on the cooperation between fish, plants, and bacteria. In aquaponics, fish droppings are transformed by bacteria into nutrients for the plants, allowing for the creation of a balanced and resilient ecosystem.

The plants grow strong and productive by filtering water through their roots, helping fish to stay healthy.

We design and realize outdoor and indoor aquaponic systems for productive and ornamental purposes. Aquaponic systems can be implemented to suit different needs. Here are a few examples of possible applications of aquaponics:

  • Thanks to their low-effort management, they are incredibly useful for restaurant owners aiming to increase their production of fresh vegetables on a local level
  • They allow companies to distinguish themselves, invest in innovative forms of agriculture, and create a unique environment that defines their brand and style
  • Private individuals willing to grow high-quality vegetables in their homes could find aquaponic systems to be incredible allies in reaching their goal
  • They also represent a valuable and interactive addition to the teaching of natural science, environmental awareness, and biology

How to realize an aquaponic system

In order to successfully realize an aquaponic system, it is necessary to ensure a hospitable environment for all the organisms coming into play. It is thus fundamental to choose and scale the fish tank according to the room taken up by plants and bacteria, and vice versa. The aim is to find the perfect balance among the system’s various components. Depending on the materials chosen and the size of the system, its cost will change.

Therefore, we always recommend starting with a pilot system that has reduced costs to practice and gain experience. Once the basics are assimilated, it is possible to make a commercial-level system function successfully.
